Eight cases of the multi-resistant bacterium MRSA were identified in the department between January and July last year, Region Sörmland writes in a press release.
The spread likely occurred via healthcare personnel or parents who used shared spaces such as toilets, lounges and kitchens, according to the region.
None of the children suffered symptoms, but they are at risk of continuing to carry the resistant bacterium.
MRSA is a staphylococcus bacterium that is resistant to the antibiotics usually used against staph. You can carry the bacterium without symptoms, but it can also cause infections with swelling or oozing sores. More serious infections do occur, but are uncommon.
