Whether the sand actually caused the accident is not clear, according to police, but cars crashed on both sides of the wire fence.
"It was like driving straight into a wall, where visibility went to zero in a microsecond," a road user tells Sydöstran.
A total of 16 cars and around 30 people were involved in the accident, which occurred just outside Sölvesborg at around 3 p.m., reports Blekinge Läns Tidning.
The road was closed in both directions for a long time, but was reopened later Monday evening.
It is not clear whether anyone is seriously injured.
