Egypt’s al-Sisi says he plans to leave office when his term ends in 2030

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced on Saturday that he intends to leave office in 2030.

It was at a graduation ceremony for fully trained military personnel that 71-year-old al-Sisi confirmed he would respect Egypt’s constitution regarding his time in power.

Leaving the constitution unchanged is the right way to go. In 2030, my term as leader of the country will end, if I am still alive.

“The issue has been resolved and will not be discussed further,” al-Sisi told the state-owned newspaper al-Ahram.

Presidential terms in Egypt were extended from four to six years in a constitutional amendment in 2019. The revised law also made it possible for the president to run for re-election for a third term.
