When British director Danny Boyle continues his zombie series, it is with a Swedish NATO unit in important roles. "28 years later" takes place on a Scottish island cut off from the rest of the world.
Very Swedish
Edvin Ryding plays the soldier Erik, who meets a few isolated Britons who have not yet fallen victim to the zombie epidemic.
My character's mission is to shoot everything they see that looks suspicious, to keep the island in quarantine.
The first line "Erik" utters in the film is "jävla fittor", a Swedish version of "you fucking cunts", which Danny Boyle asked Ryding to translate himself.
It was fun that Danny wanted to include so much Swedish in the film. They really liked that touch, so I had to Swedishize my English a bit.
"28 years later" is released 23 years after the first film "28 days later", filming took place in Newcastle in northern England last summer.
We filmed a lot on an island, about two hours north of Newcastle, in a nature reserve. It was incredibly beautiful and the whole experience was incredible.
Still, he was a bit nervous, despite his long experience in the industry.
I've been acting for 17 years and you might think I should know what I'm doing, but I felt really green. Suddenly I was sitting in the same car as an Oscar-winning director and actors who have won Tonys and Baftas.
"Stupid in the head"
But Edvin Ryding was close to not even auditioning for the role. He had not heard of Danny Boyle - or linked it to films like "Trainspotting" and "Slumdog millionaire".
I had been filming constantly for 1.5 years and was so looking forward to having a vacation when I got the question and I didn't make the connection at all. My agent said "I can't tell you what to do. But you're stupid in the head if you don't go to London and audition".
Playing against zombies was not particularly scary, for someone who grew up as a child actor in Sweden, Edvin Ryding means.
It means that you do a lot of thrillers, so I'm not entirely unaccustomed to blood and death. It was just a bit strange when those who played zombies jumped in or out of character. An MMA fighter named Chi Lewis walked around on set and growled. Others were really unpleasant but could in the next second ask for a cup of tea in a normal conversational tone.
