Edvin Endre and Alicia von Rittberg play the lead roles in the series, which has the working title "Queen Silvia".
The series begins at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where the love story also began in real life.
"Getting this job was a dream come true, and I know that both Alicia and I are really working hard to do these characters justice and to show you a fantastic love story, because that's what this ultimately is. A love story," says Edvin Endre in a press release.
The series is directed by Miguel Alexandre, and is expected to premiere in June in conjunction with the royal couple's golden wedding.
