Ecuador's president Daniel Noboa says that an unknown person has tried to poison him with chocolate and jam.

According to the president, the food items were given to him during a public appearance.

He tells CNN that the presence of three highly concentrated toxins in the sweets "could not have been unintentional", and adds that his staff has evidence that supports the claim.

The 37-year-old president says that the toxins could not have come from the products themselves or their packaging.

It is the second time that Noboa's staff has claimed that someone has tried to take his life. Earlier in October, a suspected shooting was reported to have been directed at a motorcade where he was present.
