The leaders of the ECOWAS countries have signed an agreement formally backing plans for the 6,800-kilometre pipeline. The cost is estimated at $25 billion and, if completed, it will connect 13 countries along Africa's west coast.

According to a statement from the state-owned Moroccan energy company ONHYM, a gas pipeline company will be created, with headquarters in Casablanca, Morocco, and a control body in Abuja, Nigeria.

Algeria also wants to build a gas pipeline from West Africa via the Sahara Desert.
