Ecological animal husbandry is on the decline

The number of ecologically raised animals continues to decrease, according to statistics from the Board of Agriculture. Last year, the number decreased among all animal species.

The largest decrease is seen among ecologically raised dairy cows, whose number decreased by 22 per cent in 2023. The proportion of ecologically raised dairy cows in relation to the total number decreased from 18 to 14 per cent.

The number of ecologically raised beef cattle decreased simultaneously for the fourth year in a row. In relation to the total number of cattle in Sweden, the ecologically raised decreased from 22 to 20 per cent between 2022 and 2023.

The number of ecologically raised ewes, rams, and lambs decreased simultaneously by 9 per cent.

Even among ecologically raised laying hens, a gradual decrease is seen in recent years. Last year, the number decreased by 18 per cent compared to 2022. The proportion of laying hens that were ecologically raised amounted to 12 per cent in 2023.
