Fewer than 30 percent of economists believe that the French president of the European Central Bank will remain in office for her entire term, which runs until October 2027.
If Lagarde resigns early, the safe bet is that she would be replaced by Klaas Knot, the former head of the Dutch central bank. Should Lagarde stay in office for the full term, the favorite to take over from her is Pablo Hernández de Cos, the governor of the Bank of Spain.
There has been speculation for some time that Lagarde might resign before the next French presidential election, likely in April 2027, to ensure that President Emmanuel Macron can be involved in choosing her successor.
