A total of 4,945 cases of Ebola have now been confirmed in the country, according to local health authorities. The ongoing outbreak has previously been the largest in terms of confirmed cases, but it is now also the deadliest outbreak, according to the news agency.

The outbreak started in May and has been linked to the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment.

A total of 2,299 deaths were recorded in Congo-Kinshasa during the outbreak that lasted from 2018 to 2020.
