The company told AFP news agency that a "truck carrying 413,793 KitKats was stolen during transport in Europe."
The thieves struck last week, somewhere on the road between Italy and Poland, where the chocolate-covered wafers were being transported for further distribution.
Nestlé warns that "the theft could lead to a shortage of KitKats on store shelves" ahead of Easter.
"It seems that the thieves have interpreted our slogan a bit too literally and have broken off over 12 tons of our chocolate," says a spokesperson for the brand, in reference to the chocolate's English slogan "Have a break."
