In his book "Swan Song - My Sister Diana", Charles Spencer writes that then Prince Charles seemed "drunk with happiness" the night Diana died in 1997. Later, Prince Charles is said to have said: "We will forget her in time."
Buckingham Palace has denied the claim, saying that "the pain of a brother's grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory," even many years after a loss.
However, in a new interview with the BBC, Earl Spencer stands by his version:
I was very attentive to what he (Charles) said, and those are the exact words he used and I can promise you that. And I don't hear him say he didn't say that.
Earl Spencer says the palace is trying to “fudge it” with its statement that memories can be affected. He also comments on King Charles’ reaction to the information in the book.
Well, is he furious? Is he furious or is he embarrassed?
Buckingham Palace has not commented on Earl Spencer's latest statement. When asked which of the two Charleses the public should believe, Charles Spencer replied:
I'm telling the truth.
