The Eagles' album "Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)" is the best-selling album of all time in the United States and the first to sell over 40 million copies.

According to new certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the band's 1976 album "Hotel California" is the third-best-selling album in the United States, with 28 million copies sold.

In second place is Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with 34 million copies sold.

"Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" was released almost exactly 50 years ago, on February 17, 1976.

"In a time and culture where everything seems to be becoming more fleeting by the day, it's gratifying to have been a part of something that endures, even for fifty years - we are amazed and grateful," drummer and singer Don Henley said in a written statement to the AP.
