A great honor, says the 25-year-old Swede from the stage in Madrid.

Duplantis was nominated for his second consecutive Olympic Games gold and for having improved his world record ten times. In March, he improved the record for the eleventh time to 6.27 meters.

He received the award from last year's winner, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, who wonders how many more records "Mondo" has in him.

Hopefully, there will be a few more. I believe there is more in the tank and that there will be more. The Olympic Games in Los Angeles are three years away, so I hope to set a bunch of records before then and that we can achieve something big there, he says.

Duplantis, who was also nominated last year, won ahead of Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, French swimmer Léon Marchand, Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, and Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen.

The only Swede to have received an award from the Laureus World Sports Awards previously is golf star Annika Sörenstam, who was named Female Athlete of the Year in 2004.

Armand Duplantis was named Male Athlete of the Year in the world by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and the British BBC in 2024.
