It was in mid-July that his grandmother died, aged 92. Now Duplantis wants to win another championship gold for Ingrid.
"Of course I want to honour my grandmother with many victories," he writes in a text message to Avesta newspaper.
It has been a turbulent year for Duplantis. Before the European Championships, he got married, had injury problems and then dealt with the grief of his grandmother.
"This season has been special, with both joy and sadness as well as rehab, ahead of the most important competitions," he writes to the newspaper.
The pole vault qualifiers will be decided on Friday and the finals on Sunday.
