Armand Duplantis got the nickname Mondo as a child, and it's what he's most called even today. In his late teens, the idea of changing his name arose.
As I thought then, which is a stupid way of thinking, was that I didn't want to be known as Armand, but I just wanted people to call me Mondo. So why not just take it as my real name?
He says it was a way to "mess with" his family, and describes the thoughts as "a bit of a teenage revolution".
The family, mainly in the form of his father and grandfather, however, put a stop to the plans. He let himself be persuaded to drop it, but emphasizes that the decision to keep the name Duplantis was his own.
Now I love that I've kept my name. If I had done it, it would have been the most stupid thing I would have done in my life.
