An image from the authority shows Macías wearing a t-shirt, shorts, bulletproof vest and helmet. ”Fito”, leader of the crime syndicate ”Los Choneros”, was arrested in June after having escaped from a high-security prison in Guayaquil in Ecuador last January.

He was serving a 34-year prison sentence for, among other things, murder and narcotics trafficking. In the USA, he is suspected of large-scale cocaine smuggling and also of having imported weapons.

Macías announced earlier in July in court that he accepts being extradited.

In connection with the escape last year, a wave of violence broke out in the country. Armed men occupied, among other things, a TV station, while a few hundred prison guards and other personnel were taken as hostages.

The unrest led to President Daniel Noboa introducing a state of emergency and giving the military the task of striking down the criminal gangs.
