Marset has been described as a powerful drug lord, wanted in his native Uruguay and in Brazil, Paraguay and the United States. But his network also extended to Europe and Dubai.
In addition to primarily trafficking and smuggling cocaine and marijuana, Marset is suspected of money laundering.
The search for him has led to political scandals in his home country after he was issued a passport despite being wanted.
Marset was arrested in Santa Cruz in eastern Bolivia. He was handed over to representatives of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and quickly taken aboard a U.S. plane.
