A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for driving into a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Borås last year. The man is convicted of attempted aggravated assault and incitement against an ethnic group.

It was Saturday, August 10, that a car drove into the demonstration march, where about 80 people were walking.

The man, who is in his 70s, is being convicted of deliberately driving into the demonstration. The district court believes his explanation that he ended up in the pedestrian zone by mistake. But according to the verdict, he accelerated and drove into the demonstrators on purpose when he had realized what their message was.

After first driving through the crowd, he also stopped the car and backed up several times towards protesters.

Two people were slightly injured, but according to the district court, his actions meant that "a very large number of demonstrators risked being hit or injured."

The man is also convicted of incitement against a group of people, as he spread various posts on social media that "expressed disdain for Palestinians and Muslims," the district court writes in a press release.

36 of the protesters – those who were hit or risked being hit – will receive compensation for harassment. The man will pay a total of 1.8 million kronor in damages.
