The country's interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, interrupted his vacation because of the incident, which German authorities initially described as an attempted attack.
The presence of a drone armed with explosives at an airport represents a new threat scenario, he said at a press conference, adding that the drone's design reveals a "professional design."
At the same time, the motives remain unclear and one or more perpetrators have not yet been arrested, according to Dobrindt.
Investigations are “progressing in all directions,” according to Saxony’s justice minister, Wolfgang Schwürzer.
Germany's drone defence and the NATO alliance are reportedly involved in the investigation.

The discovery of the armed drone caused several flights to be diverted from the airport in eastern Germany. A transport plane collided with an unknown object in mid-air and had to turn back to Hanover, Germany.
The airport in eastern Germany is used, among other things, for the transport of military goods to and from Ukraine.
