About ten people have been injured when a car driver rammed pedestrians and cyclists on the French holiday island of Oléron, French media report.

The situation for two of the injured is considered critical, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.

A 35-year-old suspected perpetrator has been arrested. During the arrest, he shouted "Allahu akbar," according to the prosecutor's office in La Rochelle, which is located on the mainland just north of Oléron.

The arrested man, who according to prosecutor Arnaud Laraize intentionally drove into the people, lives on the island and is reportedly known to the police. His motive is still unclear.
