The man is being prosecuted for, among other things, reckless driving, intentional infliction of serious injury, and attempted serious bodily harm. He will stand trial on Friday.

It was around 6 pm local time on Monday when a car plowed into a crowd in central Liverpool where thousands of Liverpool fans had gathered to celebrate the club's Premier League title. According to The Guardian, at least 79 people were injured, including several children.

Videos on social media show how the car hits a man who is thrown into the air. Then the vehicle heads towards a larger gathering of people – and plows through them.

About 50 people were taken to hospital or sought medical attention on their own in the region, according to local police.

The driver was arrested on the spot and had high levels of drugs in his blood when he drove into the crowd, according to the police. It has not been possible to determine any potential motive.

Large parts of central Liverpool were closed off on Monday for the football team's celebration. According to the police, the man was able to get past the barriers by closely following an ambulance.
