A car with two people has driven down into a one-meter-deep crack after a part of a county road was washed away outside Härnösand. One person has been taken to hospital.

The accident occurred in Årsta, in Härnösand municipality, after the severe rainstorm that hit the area.

It was the height of bad luck. It was a larger pothole that gave up so it became a big hole. And just when the car came and drove, everything burst, says Jan Norberg, team leader at the rescue service.

In video clips from SVT Västernorrland you can see how several meters of the road have been completely destroyed and swallowed up in the crack with a depth of approximately five meters.

Brown water masses flow past the car that stands stuck crosswise at the bottom of the rift, with the hood crushed against one side.

One of the people in the car was able to get out and up onto the road on their own, but the other had to be picked out by the rescue service and has been taken to hospital by ambulance. The car was also carrying two dogs that will be seen to by a veterinarian.

Tonight's rainstorm in Västernorrland has caused major problems and a VMA has been issued. A part of the E4 in Härnösand was flooded and several other roads have been destroyed when parts of them were washed away.
