Pictures show several train carriages lying on their sides on the main railway line between northern and southern Egypt.
The derailment reportedly occurred in al-Ayyat, a few miles south of the Great Pyramids on the Giza Plateau. The accident is said to have happened when two southbound trains collided. One was a local train; the other was travelling from Cairo to Aswan.
The railway is popular with tourists, but it was not immediately clear whether many foreigners were among the injured.
