While Swedish stock speculators were indulging in pickled herring and new potatoes — the Stockholm Stock Exchange was closed on Midsummer's Eve — trading continued as usual on the leading European stock exchanges.
The trends were generally negative, in contrast to Thursday when prices rose. The FTSE index in London fell by 0.4 per cent, the DAX index in Frankfurt dropped by 0.5 per cent and the CAC index in Paris lost 0.6 per cent.
