The tech giants weighed down Nasdaq's composite index on the first day of the trading week in New York. Nvidia fell 2.0 percent, Apple retreated 1.0 percent, and Microsoft declined 0.4 percent. Nasdaq closed at minus 0.4 percent.
The major loser was also the pharmaceutical company Moderna. The stock plummeted 16.8 percent since the company announced that its revenue this year will be significantly lower than analysts had predicted.
On the other hand, several energy companies did well as the crude oil price rose, a consequence of President Joe Biden saying on Friday that the sanctions against Russia's oil companies will be expanded. Exxon Mobil rose 2.6 percent and BP gained 1.1 percent.
The broad S&P 500 index rose 0.2 percent and the Dow Jones industrial index increased 0.9 percent.
