Austria wants to ban online sales of white snus, as well as advertising and sponsorship. It also wants to regulate the nicotine content.

The Swedish government believes that the bill negatively affects the free movement of goods within the EU. Therefore, it has submitted a so-called detailed statement, a form of protest to which Austria must now respond.

"It is the toughest tool we have. The Swedish government stands up for snus. It is an important industry for Sweden and many Swedes use snus," says Benjamin Dousa, Minister of International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, in a press release.
