Greenwood was recruited to Marseille ahead of the season, despite supporters and the city's mayor believing that the transfer should have been stopped.

The reason is that the Englishman was accused of rape and assault on his girlfriend in the autumn of 2022. At the beginning of February 2023, the investigation was dropped after the girlfriend withdrew the allegations, despite there being video clips and audio messages where Greenwood was heard and seen being threatening and violent.

His then-club Manchester United suspended the player and launched an internal investigation. The 22-year-old has not played for the club since then. Last season, he was loaned out to Spanish Getafe and this summer, Greenwood finally signed with Marseille.

Against Brest, Greenwood scored 1–0 just three minutes in and in the 31st minute, he extended the lead to 3–0 on a penalty.

Center-back Derek Cornelius recently joined Marseille from Malmö FF and the Canadian played the entire match in the premiere.
