Dog owners in Livorno will now have to carry water bottles and a spray bottle to wash away urine from streets, benches, and parked vehicles.
It is also “strictly prohibited” to allow dogs to urinate near doorways, windows and entrances to homes, offices and shops, according to a statement from Mayor Luca Salvetti’s office.
Anyone who violates the rules risks a fine of up to 500 euros, equivalent to around 5,400 SEK.
The measure - which applies between May 20 and October 31 - comes after residents of the Tuscan city complained about the stench of dog urine, especially in parks and playgrounds.
