It was in March 2023 that a 49-year-old woman was to undergo an abdominal plastic surgery operation and was anesthetized. She was then affected by oxygen deficiency and cardiac arrest and died two days later.

The doctor, who is in his 60s, was responsible for her anesthesia – despite lacking approved specialization in anesthesiology. According to the verdict, he committed several serious mistakes, which caused the woman's death – both in the choice of medication and incorrect dosing. He also failed in his monitoring of his patient.

He is sentenced for gross negligence to two years in prison. He will also pay 460,000 kronor in damages to the woman's husband and adult children. His medical license has been revoked previously.

”The defendant's inadequate record-keeping has made it more difficult to assess how the care was performed and whether it contributed to the woman's death. The investigation is, however, sufficient for the high evidentiary requirement in criminal cases to be met”, says magistrate Joakim Svensson in a press release.

The man denies the crime.
