Djurgården Plans Security for SHL Spot Amid Referee Threats

Djurgården can secure a SHL spot – in front of over 8,000 home supporters. Now, frantic planning is underway regarding security. In the event of a potential ice storming, the referees must be put to safety immediately, says HockeyAllsvenskan's sports manager Erik Ryman.

Djurgården leads the Hockeyallsvenska final against AIK with 3–1 in matches.

Victory in Friday's fifth match means SHL advancement at Hovet – in front of only Dif supporters, since no away fans are allowed into the final series' derby.

"It's the big risk"

In that case, one of the scenarios is a storming of the ice by home supporters. Something that occurred in 2014 when Djurgården took the step up to SHL.

It's the big risk that can arise and which we don't want to have, but which we know has happened before. Now, unlike then, we will have higher plexiglas around the ice that makes it harder, says Erik Ryman, Hockeyallsvenskan's sports manager.

Then I hope that there are enough security guards around the doors, and maybe even riot fences, that make it even harder to get onto the ice.

Erik Ryman says that he thinks the dialogue with the clubs is good and that he is confident in the security work. Matthias Sånemyr, CEO of Djurgården Hockey, agrees.

External threats against referees

We have a super-routine security organization and personnel. And I'm not particularly worried about the risk moment of it getting chaotic, says Sånemyr.

Besides the players and leaders, there is also personnel from TV4, which broadcasts the match, to take into account. And not least the referees – who have received external threats during this year's playoffs.

They are enormously exposed. They have police escort to and from the arena, and at certain addresses, they even have nighttime police escort. So we have a threat image against them that is enormous and completely unacceptable, says Erik Ryman.

So in the event of an ice storming, all players and leaders, but above all the referees, must be put in safety immediately. The threat image is so big right now, so we won't take any risks at all.
