The now 32-year-old goalkeeper screamed in pain when his left arm buckled under him during the return match against Cypriot Pafos on March 13 last year. It is now clear that the serious elbow injury puts an end to his career at the elite level.
"It turned out that the injury I sustained against Pafos was career-ending," says Malkolm Nilsson Säfqvist, who came to Djurgården from Halmstad in 2023, in a press release.
He has given up trying to rehabilitate himself to make a comeback.
"I won't be able to do myself justice on the pitch - and if I don't, I can't be of any joy to anyone else."
