Djurgården Prepares for SHL Return with Key Player Recruitment

Niklas Wikegård became the new sports manager and Robert Kimby came in as coach. It was a lucky draw for Djurgården. Ahead of the SHL comeback, the focus is instead on player recruitments. Here are some of the names that can become relevant.

It became three years in Hockeyallsvenskan. After the jubilation, euphoria, and supporters' brainstorming at Hovet after the victory over AIK in the "Battle of Stockholm" begins the work of building a powerful Djurgården in SHL.

Niklas Wikegård and Robert Kimby lifted the team up to SHL, now it needs to be reinforced.

Brynäs, currently in the SM final, made a success this season thanks to a group of home-returning players with Jakob Silfverberg at the forefront.

What could Djurgården get back?

+ The current squad.

Djurgården has a good situation on the forward side with Marcus Krüger as the given leader to build the team around. Among the veterans, Linus Klasen also has a contract, as well as Daniel Brodin, who rose in the final series after previously being benched.

It's also important that young talents Victor Eklund, 18, and Anton Frondell, 17, have extended their contracts and can continue their development there while waiting for greater challenges in North America.

+ The dream acquisition.

There are actually two – both Mika Zibanejad and Gabriel Landeskog have a big Djurgården heart. And it's probably allowed for supporters to dream...but, no, this is probably a utopia right now. Zibanejad, 32, has five years left on his contract with NY Rangers, which gives him over 82 million kronor per year.

Colorado captain Landeskog, 32, is just back from a nearly three-year-long injury and has four years left on his 70-million-kronor contract (per year).

+ Profiles with a Djurgården heart under contract.

Detroit defender Erik Gustafsson, 33, and the forward duo Marcus Sörensen, 33, Fribourg-Gotteron, and Alexander Wennberg, 30, San Jose, have contracts with their clubs next season. But if there is a will and opportunity for the players to get out of their contracts, they would be cannon reinforcements.

+ Players with club connections with expiring contracts in NHL/Switzerland.

Here's a bunch: Defenders William Lagesson, Detroit, Tobias Björnfot, Florida, Andreas Englund, Nashville, Philip Holm, Rapperswil-Jona, and forwards Emil Bemström, Pittsburgh, Axel Jonsson-Fjällby, Winnipeg, and Alexander Holtz, Vegas, all have expiring contracts.

Holtz, 24, will probably leave, he should have a continued future in NHL. Emil Bemström is highly sought after among SHL clubs (including Leksand, where he previously played), but also in Switzerland, as Falu-Kuriren has previously reported.
