The quarterfinal ended 6–3, 7–5, 3–6, 6–4 to Djokovic.
But despite winning in four sets, it was a close story.
In this type of match, a few points on one side or the other decide who wins, says the Serbian world seventh after the match.
"Had luck"
It was Djokovic's 14th quarterfinal win in the US Open in New York, which means he equals the record for most won quarterfinals in the competition.
I thought I was lucky to save some decisive break balls in the second set. I think he was the better player for most of the second and third sets, says the Serb about his quarterfinal opponent.
Fritz saved two match balls in an even fourth set before he sealed his own fate with a double fault.
The last game was anxiety-provoking. It was tough for Taylor to finish with a double fault, he didn't deserve that, says Djokovic.
Chasing records
38-year-old Djokovic is aiming to reach his eleventh US Open final and is chasing his 25th Grand Slam title – which would be a new record.
Right now, he shares the record, 24 wins, with Australian Margaret Court.
Next, he will face Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal. The last time the two met was in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open earlier this year. Then Djokovic won in four sets.
In total, Djokovic has 5–3 in head-to-head meetings with the Spanish world second.
