A new grading system is planned to come into effect in 2028. The possibility of assigning "happiness grades" will be reduced, as new, national final exams will be written digitally, marked centrally and weighed into the final grade.
However, the Swedish National Agency for Education's work on digitized tests has been marred by major technical problems, and ultimately the government pulled the emergency brake.
The Swedish National Agency for Education is now proposing a phased introduction. The first final exams, which are planned for upper secondary school in 2029, will be written mainly on paper for the first two years and marked at the school itself. In 2031, only the essay parts will be written digitally, and from 2032 digitalization will be scaled up gradually, according to the proposal to the government.
