The Czech Republic's football team failed to thank their fans after their 6-0 victory in the World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar. This has consequences.

Team captain Tomás Soucek will be stripped of the captain's armband for the next international match. In addition, the intended bonus for the Czech players for Monday's 6–0 win against Gibraltar will be withdrawn.

The punishment from the Czech Football Association is based on the national team players failing to thank their supporters after the match. This after some fans chanted "Fight for the Czech Republic" throughout the match.

"The fans have every right to express their dissatisfaction with the substandard performances in recent matches. The reaction from the players should have been the opposite. They should have thanked the committed supporters," the Czech Football Association said in a statement.

The Czech Republic has had a tough qualifying campaign, with the 1-2 loss to the Faroe Islands last month being the biggest blow, which led to the dismissal of national captain Ivan Hasek.

Despite that, they secured second place in Group L, behind Croatia, and will play a playoff in the spring for a place in the World Cup in North America next year.

The withdrawn player bonuses will instead be donated to charity.
