"It's a sad feeling in my heart that I'm not following the team up to SHL. At the same time, I'm extremely grateful for the season we've had", says the 38-year-old to the club's website and wishes the team good luck.

Axelsson resumed his career last year after not playing at all during the 2023–2024 season. During the 2021–2022 season, he was part of the team that relegated Djurgården to HockeyAllsvenskan.

This season, the outspoken forward profile made 31 points, 17 goals and 14 assists, in 29 league matches and 14 points, 2 goals and 12 assists, in 16 playoff matches.

Djurgården won HockeyAllsvenskan and later defeated rival AIK 4–1 in the final series in April. After the match, Axelsson said he hoped for a continuation.

This last match, you don't want it to be the last one. I'll grab hold of Wikegård (Niklas, sports manager) and negotiate something good, he said.

Next season, Djurgården will be in SHL for the first time in three years.
