"She was incredibly funny, and completely without falsity", writes Midler on social media.
Actor and director Ben Stiller calls Keaton "one of the best film actors ever", and actor Kerry Washington writes that her "talent, courage and authenticity were a true inspiration".
Keaton directed two of singer Belinda Carlisle's music videos, and Carlisle describes it as Keaton being a big part of her career.
"She was kind and eccentric and I was lucky to know her", she writes on social media and adds that Keaton will be missed.
Singer Nancy Sinatra writes that she "worshipped her - idolized her".
The news of Diane Keaton's death came on Saturday. She became 79 years old.
