The explosion occurred in a parking lot in the town of Balashikha, on the eastern outskirts of Moscow. The car's driver died at the scene.
Independent Russian media further report that the deceased was General Damir Davydov. He was said to have been responsible for the distribution of missiles and artillery pieces to Russia's frontline forces in the war against Ukraine.
Russia's Federal Investigative Service has taken over the case, but has not identified the victim.
Just over a year ago, another Russian general was killed in a bombing in the same location, just a few hundred meters from where this explosion occurred.
