A detailed plan that opens the door for a new graphite mine in Kiruna Municipality has been adopted, the government says in a press release.

It is about the Nunasvaara graphite deposit in Vittangi.

The detailed plan, approved by the government on Thursday, was developed by the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten on behalf of the government. The decision cannot be appealed, the government says in a statement.

According to Andreas Carlson (KD), Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Nunasvaara in Kiruna is Europe’s largest and richest graphite deposit.

"The graphite deposit is very important for both Sweden's and the EU's supply of natural graphite," he says in the press release.

"Graphite plays an important role in battery manufacturing and for the green transition," he adds.
