Despite Winter in Dalarna – Vasalopp Skiers Get Winter

Spring has arrived in almost all of southern Sweden, despite the fact that it has still been below freezing during nights in some areas. This year's spring is both a little late and a little early in some places.

In the end of February, SMHI can now establish that large parts of southern Sweden have got spring. But it has not reached all parts yet.

For example, the South Swedish Highlands have had a few minus degrees during the night, but the temperature will rise to five plus degrees during the day. It's possible that they will get spring now during the day, says Hilda Westberg, on-duty meteorologist at SMHI.

Even in the northern parts of Svealand and southern parts of Norrland, spring temperatures prevail.

In Götaland, spring normally arrives around February 10. But in eastern Svealand and the southern Norrland coast, spring is now rather early.

But there will be no spring for the Vasalopp skiers on Sunday – in the areas around Mora, winter still prevails.

They have had a cold night, though. It's mainly along Lake Siljan and southern Dalarna that they are getting spring now, says Hilda Westberg.

However, it will take until spring has made its entrance in the entire country. In the very northernmost parts of the country, spring usually arrives at the beginning of June.

If the daily mean temperature is above 0 degrees but below 10, it's called a day with spring temperatures. If this occurs for seven consecutive days, it's counted as spring having arrived on the first day. Even if the temperature drops afterwards, it's still counted as spring.
