Albert Johansson gave Detroit the lead before Minnesota responded with four straight goals.
Detroit then had a very strong third period where, among others, Axel Sandin-Pellikka - set up by Lucas Raymond - scored before Patrick Kane tied the game at 4–4. But Kirill Kaprizov completed his hat trick and decided the game for Minnesota on the power play.
With the second straight loss, Detroit is tenth in the Eastern Conference with five games left in the regular season. For Minnesota, with five Swedes on the roster, the playoff spot is already secured.
The last time Detroit played playoff hockey was in 2016, with Swedish stars Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall on the ice.
