Åstedt had already impressed on Monday morning, when she broke her personal best by three hundredths of a second (54.43) and advanced to the semifinals. The record only lasted a few hours.
During Monday night's semifinal, Åstedt clocked 53.87. However, the time was not enough for the final. The Swede had the 12th-best time.
"A week ago I didn't even know if I could swim mentally. I didn't know if I could swim 100 meters, and then I do this," says Åstedt.
It feels so good.
She is the fourth Swede of all time to swim under 54 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle, according to SVT.
