Preventing illegal immigration is the top priority in the new strategy, presented by EU commissioners Henna Virkkunen and Magnus Brunner. The second is protecting those who need it, and the third is attracting the talent the EU needs.
"We will continue to deliver. It will mean more returns. This is about the credibility of our system. Citizens expect the EU to fight those behind illegal migration," Virkkunen said at a press conference in Brussels.
In parallel, a new visa strategy will also be introduced, with the aim of strengthening the ability to punish countries that refuse to take back people expelled from the EU.
