Liberal Maine has long been seen as the Democrats' best chance to win a Senate seat by defeating veteran Republican Senator Susan Collins in this fall's congressional elections.
Platner won the primary election in June – despite reports that he had been unfaithful to his wife, among other things.
But now a woman he used to date has come forward in Politico with detailed allegations of abuse in 2021.
Platner denies the allegations. But several high-ranking party colleagues, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, are urging him to end his campaign.
