In a letter, they urge the American equivalent of the Financial Supervisory Authority to investigate whether Donald Trump has engaged in insider trading and market manipulation in connection with the drastic announcements about trade barriers, writes The Guardian.
With Senator Elizabeth Warren at the forefront, they wonder if the strong market movements enriched people within the Trump administration and if they, including the president's family, "had prior knowledge of the tariff pause that they abused to make stock deals".
On social media, Trump proclaimed on Wednesday: "this is a fantastic opportunity to buy". Only hours later, he paused the general tariffs for 90 days, which caused the stock market to surge.
The letter has been signed by, among others, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Financial Committee member Ron Wyden, and several senators. In a separate letter, a few of them also requested that the Attorney General initiate an investigation into potential violations of state laws.
