Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said in a statement on Saturday that Democrats will not vote to move forward with a funding proposal if funding for the Department of Homeland Security is included.
One of the politicians opposing the proposal is Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat from Nevada. The senator believes that the head of the department and the Trump administration are "putting undertrained, combative federal agents on the streets without accountability."
The announcement means an increased the risk of a U.S. government shutdown next week.
Funding for much of the federal government in the United States expires on the last day of January. The funding must be approved in the Senate, which requires support from Democrats.
