The reactions are immediate after the quarrel in the White House between Zelenskyj and Trump.
"Today it became clear that the free world needs a new leader", writes EU's Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas on X, and continues:
"It's up to us, Europeans, to take on that challenge".
Her words are part of a chorus of European support for Zelenskyj.
"A united Sweden stands behind our friends in Ukraine. From the beginning of the invasion, during these three years of war, until today – and into the future. Slava Ukraini!", writes Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) on X.
Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) gives a written comment to TT:
"It's important that the US remains engaged in Ukraine. The government will continue to work for this in talks with American representatives, and for Europe to close ranks and strengthen support for Ukraine", she writes and continues:
"The Ukrainian people deserve our respect and our support. They are not alone in their efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace."
Zelenskyj thanks
Germany's outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as the incoming Friedrich Merz, write similar support on social media, which also includes EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
France's President Macron emphasizes after the quarrel in the White House that it is Russia that has attacked in Ukraine and is the "aggressor".
Zelenskyj notes Kristersson's and the other leaders' backing on X: "Thanks for your support".
But not all of Europe stands united. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán writes that "Strong men create peace, weak men create war. Today, President Donald Trump took a brave stand for peace. Even if it was hard for many to swallow. Thanks".
"Doing Putin's dirty work"
In the US, reactions are divided along party lines. One of the Democrats' top leaders, Senator Chuck Schumer, states that:
"Trump and (Vice President JD) Vance are doing Putin's dirty work".
Similar voices are heard from a long line of Democrats, while Republicans stand behind Trump.
What we saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful and I don't know if we can ever do business with Ukraine again, said Senator Lindsay Graham outside the White House, one of several similar comments from Trump's party.
