The Democrats' minority leader in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, says that he is not willing to risk a shutdown of the government apparatus and that he therefore can vote yes to the Republicans' budget proposal.

The Senate is to vote on the budget proposal on Friday, after it passed the House of Representatives with a narrow margin.

However, in the Senate, support from at least seven Democrats is required to avoid a shutdown.

It is unclear how the rest of the Democratic members will position themselves, many have said they are willing to risk a shutdown.

Trump has taken a wrecking ball to our country and wielded chaos as a weapon, said Schumer on Thursday local time, about the president's cuts to the government apparatus.

For Donald Trump, a shutdown would be a gift. It would be the best distraction he can get for his appalling agenda.
