Long library queues for Anne Carson’s books after Nobel Prize win as publishers plan reprints

There are long lines at libraries to borrow books by this year's Nobel Prize winner, Anne Carson. The publishers are out of stock, but four titles will be reprinted at the end of October.

At Stockholm Public Library branches, nearly 500 people are now in the queue for the four copies of “Red Autobiography” that were acquired when the announcement was made. At libraries in Värmland, 64 people are in the queue for twelve copies of “Red Autobiography”, a title also recommended as a good introduction to the Canadian poet and author.

“There is strong demand for her as a poet,” says Andreas Johansson, a library assistant in Karlstad.

Carson’s books are out of print with Swedish publishers, but Albert Bonniers is currently reprinting “Eros the Bittersweet”, “Red Doc”, “The Beauty of the Husband” and “Red Autobiography”. The plan is to publish them at the end of October.

The same applies to Ellerströms, where publisher Marie Pettersson writes in an email:

“All four of our titles are out of print, but we’ve already sent them all for reprinting.”

The reprints of “Norma Jean Baker of Troy”, “Idle Men” and “In Brief” will be published on October 24. The latest book, “Fel Norma”, will come “only a little later” because it is a four-colour book with Anne Carson’s own illustrations.

Correction: An earlier version of the text gave an incorrect publication date for Ellerström’s titles.
